China has been on the internet intermittently since May 1989 and on a permanent basis since 20 April 1994. In 2008 China became the country with the largest population on the Internet and has remained so. As of July 2016, 730,723,960 people (53.2% of the country's total population) were internet users.
Background. The political and ideological background of the Internet censorship is considered to be one of Deng Xiaoping's favorite sayings in the early 1980s: "If you open a window for fresh air for longer than 10 hours, you have to expect some flies to blow in." The saying is related to a period of the economic reform of China that became known as the "socialist market economy".
